Nitric Oxide (NO) Generating Face Mask Insert for the Prevention and Treatment of COVID-19 and Other Infectious Agents
NOTA Laboratories is focused on developing ultra-low-cost solid and liquid phase nitric oxide gas (NO) generation technology, which can be used in a face mask or as nasal spray to help boost the body’s innate immunity and other functions as outlined in the figure below. NO is a critical messaging molecule in the body and is made in vivo by endothelial, respiratory epithelial cells and innate immune cells. In the sinuses and lungs, NO plays an important role in combating infectious agents (viruses, bacteria and fungi).
Nitric Oxide’s Medical Use and Safety: Inhaled NO (iNO) at 10 -50 ppm is currently FDA approved to treat pulmonary hypertension. A recently completed Phase I Clinical Trial has also demonstrated the safety of iNO in short bursts (multiple days) at 160 ppm. Other clinical trials are evaluating iNO for patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung distressed neonates. A number of studies have also been conducted demonstrating that gaseous NO is an effective broad-spectrum bactericidal and viricidal agent. It’s efficacy against SARS, a coronavirus, has also been shown. More recently, a clinical trial has been initiated at Massachusetts General Hospital to determine iNO’s effectiveness against COVID-19
NO Generating Facemask: NOTA has developed a proprietary technology that can generate 30 ppm (± 20% with a design range of 10-80 ppm) of NO for up to 8 hours from a ~3 cm dry chemical disk that can be placed into any commercially available face mask. The disk is made of a proprietary blend of nitric oxide generating chemicals that have the ability to safely regulate the concentration of NO gas released. It is delivered in a stick-on pouch that can be affixed to a user’s own face mask. Once in place, the user’s breath delivers sufficient humidity to release the gaseous NO that is drawn into the nose and mouth upon normal respiration. The disk also turns white once the NO is depleted.
NOTA’s NO pouch / mask design is cost effective, has a long shelf-life and can be worn to prevent and/or kill viruses and bacteria in an infected patient. It is an ideal design for both developed and developing countries as it is easily and rapidly mass produced in the millions.
Strategy and Tactical Plan: NOTA seeks funding to fast-track a clinical trial of its mask design’s effectiveness in treating COVID-19 infection and to scale production. NOTA’s very experienced scientific and business team is led by Mark E. Meyerhoff, the Philip J Elving Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan.
